A small college announced the launch of a new program, with very little pre-planning. As time went by, there was much confusion and angst as to where the program would be located, who would be in charge, who should be credited with founding it, what the major focus of the program should be, and many other challenges.

Solution

After taking the participants through a strategic planning process, team members were able to settle into their respective roles. And, major adversaries found ways of respectfully communicating and collaborating with each. As one participant said at the end of the strategic planning retreat, “I cannot believe you were able to get all of these Type A’s to quiet down and actually listen to each other. Generally, our meetings have ended in shouting matches with people storming out of the room. Today, we actually made significant, cooperative progress.”
